“Every time I pick up some knitting needles, or sketch a design I feel like I am tapping into our shared heritage and tradition the world over of how to make things with our hands. Stepping into the unknown of the creative development process.”

The part I always loved, and could not get enough of, was the MAKING. The magical alchemy of taking a thread - a single line, and turning into loops, and knots, which created a fabric, which could be shaped around the body to encapsulate it - to keep it warm, to flatter it, to express something about the person within it, and all without wasting anything. There is a certain alchemy and satisfaction, an efficiency that comes with fully fashioned knitwear that is unlike any other clothing process. 

Naturally zero-waste, and unexpectedly mathematical. This process never ceases to amaze me. Having the experience, skill and intuition to predict how a thread of yarn would work on certain needles or machines, in a certain stitch to create a certain type of fabrication is a lifetime process. How that will feel, and drape on the body, the possibilities are truly endless, and the ways to approach it, the same. Do I have a texture and design in mind, that I really want to see realized, or do I try some things out 

and see how the yarn behaves on its own, being open to happy accidents and going with the flow of the creative development process? 

HJK is a culmination of my love of craft, of following the creative process, combined with a personal love of simple, modern, well made clothing in natural fibers. I want clothing that will stylistically last forever, those pieces you intuitively reach for again and again and that become part of your life and journey alongside you through the ups and downs of it all. Maybe with a bit of happy, gentle color to brighten your morning when you open your wardrobe.
